Mobile App or Website? How to Decide

Mobile app or website for your business? When a fast site that shows on Google is enough, when an iPhone and Android app pays off, and how to start cheaply.

It is one of the most repeated questions: should I build a mobile app or a website? The short answer: start with whatever reaches your customer with the least friction, and most businesses start with the website.

The website: the easiest way in

The customer arrives from Google, a WhatsApp link or a QR code, with no download and no phone space used. That is the least friction. It suits:

  • Businesses customers search for the first time (restaurant, clinic, salon, services company).
  • Anyone who wants to appear in Google search, since apps do not show up in general search as easily.
  • Anyone who wants to start fast and at lower cost.

The app: when use repeats

An app earns the effort of downloading if the customer will open it every week: repeat orders, a loyalty scheme, regular bookings, subscription tracking. It gives you:

  • An icon on the home screen and instant notifications.
  • A faster experience for repeat users (saved address and payment, re-order in two taps).
  • Smooth use of the camera, location and more.

A quick decision table

IfBest fit
The customer visits once or twice a yearWebsite
You want to appear on GoogleWebsite
The customer re-orders weeklyWebsite, then an app
You have a field team needing tasks, photos and signaturesA staff app
You want notifications and a points schemeApp
Your budget is limited right nowA website with ordering or booking

Can you combine them?

Yes, and that is what we usually recommend: one system behind the scenes serving the website and the apps together, so data is never entered twice. Start with the website, and once demand is proven add apps for customers, staff and owner on iPhone and Android without rebuilding. That is the path of our packages: Presence, then Business, then the full Ecosystem.

A note on the stores

Publishing on Apple's and Google's stores needs a developer account, and the store fees (Apple's is 99 dollars a year) are registered in your company's name so the app stays yours. This is a principle we hold to.

Try before you decide

Create a sample in your business name and see how your app would look before any commitment. If you want a rough cost, read the app cost guide and the prices page, or look at what we build.

Three businesses and the decision for each

A family restaurant: starts with a website with a menu, ordering, table booking and a WhatsApp button, and appears on the map. An app later if regular customers start ordering weekly.

A maintenance company with a field team: needs an app for technicians (tasks, locations, photos, signature) and a website for customers. Here the staff app matters more than a customer app.

A dental clinic: a website with booking and reminders, because a patient will not install an app for a visit or two a year.

Three quick tests

  1. Frequency test: will the customer open the service more than once a month?
  2. Discovery test: do they search for you on Google before they know you?
  3. Value test: does the app offer something a website cannot (notifications, points, camera, offline)?

If your answer is yes only to the first and third, an app fits. If it is yes to the second, start with the website.

The installable web app: a middle path

A modern website can be installed on the phone's home screen and behave like an app without going through the stores. It is a quick way to test demand before investing in store apps.

Common questions

Does an app show up in Google search?

Websites are what is indexed and shown in general search, while apps are mostly discovered through the stores or links and ads. That is why most businesses start with a good website and then appear on the map.
