How to Choose a POS System in Muscat: 8 Questions

How to choose a POS system in Muscat: eight questions on VAT, Arabic receipts, barcodes, stock and offline selling before you pay.

Choosing a POS system in Muscat looks easy until real selling starts: a queue at the till, an Arabic receipt that prints badly, stock that never updates. These eight questions separate a system that serves you for years from one you replace after six months.

1. Does the receipt handle VAT, Arabic and English?

If your business is VAT-registered, the tax must show clearly on the receipt. Check that the system prints in Arabic and English together, in a clear font and the correct right-to-left direction, with numbers and amounts that do not flip when printed. Print a real receipt yourself before buying, not a picture from the brochure.

2. Does it work with the hardware you have?

Ask about the barcode scanner, the receipt printer (usually thermal), the cash drawer and the screen. A system that works only with devices the provider sells you ties you to that provider. Better if it runs on common hardware you can buy from any shop.

3. What happens when the internet drops?

The till must not stop because the connection got weak. Ask: can it keep selling offline and sync when the connection returns? That one question rules out many systems.

4. Does stock update with every sale?

A good POS reduces the quantity the moment you sell and warns you when an item nears its minimum. With more than one branch, you should see each branch's stock from one place. Read more about inventory management.

5. Which payment types does it accept?

Cash, card, transfer and e-wallets. If you also run an online shop, ask whether online and in-store sales feed one stock.

6. What reports do you get?

At minimum: today's sales, best sellers, profit per item, the till count at end of shift, and who sold what. Ask to see the reports on your phone, because a shop owner is not sitting behind the screen all day.

7. Who owns your data?

The longer you operate, the more your data is worth. Ask: can I export items, customers and sales to Excel at any time? And what happens to my data if I stop paying?

8. How long does a new employee need to learn it?

A system a new cashier learns in twenty minutes beats a feature-rich one that needs a full day of training. Have one of your staff try it in front of you.

What we build

We build point-of-sale systems around your kind of business: a grocery, a pharmacy, an optician or a restaurant, with stock and reports on your phone, connected to the devices you already use. See the point-of-sale system and the grocery or online shop examples. Then tell us about your business, and you get one fixed price before we start.

A ten-minute test before you buy

Ask for a trial and run this scenario yourself, because a good meeting demo does not reveal the problems of a busy day:

  1. Add five items with barcode, price and tax, two of them with long Arabic names.
  2. Sell three items to a customer, then return one. Do stock and the till update at once?
  3. Print the receipt in Arabic and English and check that tax and total are clear.
  4. Disconnect the internet and sell two items. Are both recorded and synced when it returns?
  5. Close the shift and read the till report. Does it match the cash in the drawer?
  6. Add a new user with the "seller" role only. Can they change prices?

Mistakes shop owners make

  • Buying a system with a huge number of options and using a tenth of them: every extra option is slowness at the till.
  • Ignoring hardware: buying a system that does not work with the thermal printer you already own.
  • Counting only the monthly price: add yearly fees, support, devices and training.
  • Not testing returns and discounts, which are the things most often wrong on busy days.
  • Forgetting the future: a second branch or an online shop in a year. Ask whether stock will stretch to that without a rebuild.

Common questions

Do I need dedicated POS hardware?

No. Many systems run on an ordinary computer or tablet with a receipt printer and a barcode scanner. Ask which devices are supported before buying so you are not tied to one provider.

Can the POS connect to my online shop?

Yes, as long as both draw on one stock. See how that works for online shops and how to choose a payment gateway.
